Persimmon 2018 Redesign 2

The big changes are in the cheeks and hair.  Both of been simplified.  I think this gives a cleaner look to the character and it skips a lot of little fiddly lines.

The other major change I made was in how I do ink and paint.  My method had been to fill with the body color, then the ventral color, hair, eyes, etc, and shadows and highlights last. 

I tried reversing that order.   In traditional painting, painting over a value painting is not uncommon.  In traditional cel painting, everything is drawn front to back so your shadows happen early in the process.  I found that the darker color of the shadows makes it easier to spot gaps.  I'm also much quicker painting the color layer because I can slop around a lot behind the shadow layer and I'm doing cleanup on edges less. 

Playback of this drawing set was very encouraging.  Roughly estimating from the time lapse, the new paint method is about 10x faster than my old one and produces a sharper result.  I'm rather pleased. ^.^
